1. What is Focusing?Focusing is a body-oriented process of self-awareness and inner listening, developed by Eugene Gendlin, PhD. It helps you connect with your Felt Sense—the subtle, bodily way you experience situations—so you can gain clarity, self-trust, and meaningful insights. "Focusing is a way to pay attention to what your mind and body feel to help you grow and heal," Dr. Gendlin described. It’s about noticing your body’s feelings about things without judging them. This skill, innate in everyone, often gets lost as we age. Rediscovering this intrinsic ability can lead to significant personal transformation. Dr. Gendlin emphasised that this practice differs from conventional attention to feelings, as "it begins with the body and occurs in the zone between the conscious and unconscious." Read more here

2. Who is Dr. Eugene Gendlin?Eugene Gendlin, PhD (1926–2017), was a philosopher and psychologist who developed Focusing, a body-oriented process of inner awareness and personal transformation. His research at the University of Chicago revealed that meaningful change occurs when people tune into their subtle, bodily-felt sense of experience. Gendlin’s work bridges philosophy, psychology, and self-growth, influencing therapy, coaching, and mindfulness. He authored several books, including Focusing, Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy, and A Process Model. Watch Laura's popular animated video to learn more about his life and work!

4. Is Focusing like meditation? The short answer? Kind of, but not really. The Focusing process can sometimes look similar to meditation or mindfulness. There are many different styles of Focusing and meditation. We feel it's challenging to make definitive statements. However, Focusing and meditation generally both require the ability of inner attentiveness, acceptance and being present in the moment. Sometimes they are both experienced in a supportive outer environment. We feel the purpose and intentions are different. Focusing is not a relaxation technique. Focusing is a trauma-informed, introspective, somatic (body-oriented) process where you intentionally invite Felt Senses. Therefore, you learn to access implicit inner knowing. (I will cover more on Dr. Eugene Gendlin's Philosophy of the Implicit in an upcoming video.) Many individuals have reported that Focusing has enhanced their existing meditative or spiritual practices.
-
7. Is Focusing a type of therapy? No, Focusing is not therapy. However, it is a powerful tool for personal growth and is often used alongside therapy, coaching, and other healing practices. Please refer to our Client Bill Of Rights to better understand our philosophy and your rights as a client. We stand behind our values: 98.9% of clients new to Focusing feel supported, safe, and in good hands with Laura. 100% of clients with previous Focusing experience agree that Laura has an accepting warmth and a gentle grounding presence. 8. Will you give me advice? I don't like that. No, Focusing is not about diagnosing, advising, analysing, or assuming what’s best for someone else. The process honours the wisdom and inner knowing held within each person’s body. The Felt Sense carries its own direction forward, and Focusing supports personal autonomy by creating space for that knowing to emerge—without outside interpretation or interference. These values are central to Focusing: Each person’s experience is their own to explore—without judgment or interference. The Focuser is always in charge of their own process. For more on this approach, please refer to the Client Bill of Rights.

3. What makes this Focusing training different from other mindfulness or meditation courses?Unlike traditional mindfulness or meditation, which focus on quieting the mind, Focusing is an active, interactive process of tuning into your body’s felt sense—the key to real change. This course provides structured guidance, live practice, and a supportive environment to help you integrate Focusing into your daily life.

2. How are the advanced courses different from the Focusing Foundations Training? While the Foundations Training teaches the core principles of Focusing, advanced courses go deeper. You’ll refine your skills, explore more complex Focusing processes, and gain greater fluency in guiding yourself and others. They emphasize personal integration, deeper Presence, and working with life’s unfolding process.
-
3. Will I have Focusing partnerships? It depends on the course. Some advanced courses emphasize Solo Focusing (Focusing alone), helping you deepen your ability to guide yourself. Others include a mix of Solo Focusing and partner practices to refine your skills in both areas. Each course description will specify the format, so you can choose what best supports your learning.
-
1. Who are these advanced courses for? These courses are designed for those who have already completed the Focusing Foundations Training (Parts 1 & 2) or equivalent training.
